Medieval Russian History
Explores the socio-economic, political, and cultural foundations of Medieval Russia beginning with ancient Slavic settlements and foreign invasions and concluding with the creation of the Romanov dynasty in the 17th century. Major topics include the impact of foreign invasions (e.g. Mongols), the influence of the Byzantine Empire, the rise of Muscovy, and the internal dynamics of Muscovite society.
Imperial Russian History
Explores the socio-economic, political, and cultural foundations of imperial Russia from Peter the Great and concludes with the February Revolution of 1917. Major topics include the nature of autocracy, the role of serfdom, and the roots of Russia's revolutionary tradition.
History of 20th-Century Russia
The course explores the history of modern Russia and the Soviet Union, including the development of capitalism and industrialization, the revolutions of 1905 and 1917, the formation and evolution of the Soviet Union, Stalinism, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and recent developments.
World War II
The History of World War II is an interdisciplinary course that includes the study of World War II through documents, literature and arts. The course includes films, documentaries and discussions. The students are introduced to the World War in the Russian perspective. The course includes meeting with Russian War veterans, visiting museums.
History and Archaeology of Samara region
A survey of the Samara region history and its geographic and cultural features. The course includes videos and fieldtrips to historic places of Samara. You will visit the bunker of Stalin placed as deep as 12-storied building underground, Samara archeological museum of Samara State University.
Capstone workshop: My view on Russian History
Students will earn 3 ECTS credits for a 15-day course.
